3-A SANITARY COMPOUNDS

3A-Sanitary Standard Number 18-03 sets forth the requirements for multiple-use rubber and rubber-like materials, used as product contact surfaces in dairy equipment. This particular standard primarily covers materials that will be used in the production, processing, or handling of milk or milk products. It also tests certain conditions relevant to the servicing, cleaning, or sterilization of the equipment.

In addition to complete formulation compliance to 21CFR 177.2600, 3A-Sanitary 18-03 also requires testing for resistance to milk fat absorption, distilled water absorption, hot air aging stability, and original tensile and elongation. Furthermore, resistance to phosphoric acid, nitric acid, alkaline cleaner, and chlorine sanitizer test solutions is also tested. For more information, please go to: www.3-a.org or call our sales department.

3A-Sanitary compounds are classified according to the expected exposure temperatures for both product and/or sterilization, as well as exposure temperatures encountered in cleaning and bactericidal treatment. These classes are as follows:

Class I:  Product or sterilization temperature up to 300°F; cleaning / bactericidal treatment up to 180°F

Class II:  Product or sterilization temperature up to 250°F; cleaning / bactericidal treatment up to 180°F

Class III:  Product or sterilization temperature up to 120°F; cleaning / bactericidal treatment up to 180°F

Class IV:  Product or sterilization temperature up to 100°F; cleaning / bactericidal treatment up to 180°F
